Trip 05-06: Day 1 - Island

Woke up afresh in the morning. The sky brightened quite early (5.30am). Today we planned to go to Taman Tunku Abdul Rahman - one of the famous island, Pulau Manukan.

After breakfast, we walked around the vicinity to check out any better guesthouse available. Found North Borneo Cabin which was in Gaya Street. They had a very decent living room, 4 domitory rooms and 3 private rooms. It was the last day of the promotional package -RM15 per head, inclusive breakfast, internet and hot shower. A good deal. So we decided to shift our stuff to this new place.

Then we met my sister and proceeded to jetty to catch up a boat to the island. The boat fare was not cheap - RM17 per person. On top of that, additional RM6 for docking fees (we need to pay for the boat packing fees??) and entrance fees of RM3 to the park.

The ride to the island was great. Bouncing for 20 minutes. Thrilled.....

The island was nice. Water was clear. You can see lots of fish swimming around.

As it was midday, we lunched in the island's restaurant. The price was not cheap though. After meal, soaked in the sea water. Occasionally we had bit from the small fish. Unpleasant. There was a report saying some people treated the fish bit as therapy. Kind of torture.

Pulau Manukan was featured in Amazing Race season 4 (year 2003). It was in this island where the contestants had their road block event. This was also the pitstop for the leg in Malaysia.

We then headed back to the town about 3pm. After shower in guesthouse, went to cafe in Borneo Backpacker Lodge. Claimed to be serving best coffee in town. The interior design of the cafe was nice. There was antique stuff used as part of the decoration. This cafe was featured in one of the local travel magazines. Their famous menu - black coffee and charcoal toasted bread with coconut jam.

After the break, we strolled around the town market. There was non existence of Chinese people around that area. Guess they have gone to upmarket town area for shopping. Had roasted chicken wing for rm1 - a typical snack in Sabah....yummy.

Dinner was Bak Kut Teh - so called Klang version. Mind to tell you, many Chinese restaurants in KK have Bak Kut Teh. Still the one serve in Klang is the best one (and Malaysia probably).

Category: Travel OK, time is catching up. I have about 3 weeks left before the trip. Have drafted out initial itinerary: 6 May - Fly to BKK and transit to Udon Thani. From Udon Thani, go to Nong Khai and cross over Laos border. Immigration office opens until 10pm. Hope to reach Vientiane before midnite. 7 May - Excursion around Vientiane. 8 May - Travel to Vang Vieng. Not really want to spend 11 hours on the bus to get to Luang Prabang. Have a pit stop will be nicer. 9 May - Continue to Luang Prabang. 10 May - Excursion around Luang Prabang. 11 May - Slow boat to Pak Beng. Mandatory pit stop due to slowliness of the boat. 12 May - Slow boat to Huoy Xai. I guess have to over night here (immigration office might be closed at time of arrival). 13 May - Cross over to Thailand. Might not stay in Chiang Rai. Proceed to Chiang Mai. 14 May -Back to Malaysia.

Kumano Kodo - Day 1

Just came back from Osaka last week. It was my personal and solo trip of the year. There were only two main focuses of the trip — the Kumano Kodo and the Expo 2025 Osaka. Let me share my experience from the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. Well, it felt more like a hike in my local hills. I chose a 4-day, 3-night walk with a boat trip included. This route was the simplest, covering only about 7 km of walking (though I added some extra distance for personal exploration). It was Route 3 of the Nakahechi route. By collecting 10 stamps along this route (at designated stamping points), I should be eligible for the Dual Pilgrim certificate if I complete the last 100 km on foot of the Camino de Santiago in Portugal. All my accommodations and packed lunches were arranged through the official Kumano Travel website. Although the booking response was a bit slow, I managed to receive confirmation about 2 or 3 weeks before my flight.  To get to the Kumano area, I took a train (Kuroshio limited express) ...

Expo 2025 Osaka

Some photos to share from Expo 2025 Osaka (the country pavilions that I managed to visit). There were lots of people, and some pavilions required queuing for hours. The weather was unforgiving too—one day was hot and another day was rainy (I bought a two-day pass for the visit). I only manages to visit eleven country pavilions. Overall, it was fun but tiring.  Photos taken with iPhone 14.
