Who moved my cheese?

This is an interesting story found on the same title of the book. The book is less than hundred pages but it teaches some crucial principles in dealing with change.

There are 4 characters in the story. There are 2 mice (Sniff and Scurry) and 2 little people (Hem and Haw). It tells about their goal to find the cheese in the maze. Cheese is the metaphor in our life. It could be wealth, career, health, relationship, possession, spiritual etc. It happens that each of them found the same cheese. As life goes on, they travel to the cheese spot from home for the supply everyday. The mice are using their usual route and arrive early. But the little people are gradually waking up late and coming late as they are living in comfort zone.

One day, someone has moved the cheese. The mice arrived early as usual and found no cheese. They knew the cheese would be gone sooner or later as they noticed it has been moved a bit day by day. So what should they do?

Sniff sniffed around for new cheese while Scurry wasted no time but ran out to find the new cheese. Both were in the maze again. The maze is considered the life of uncertainty and challenge. One would get lost in it.

Finally, after several trials and errors, they found a new cheese spot. It was the best cheese they ever had.

Back to the little people. By the time they arrived, they were shocked that the cheese was gone. Not knowing what to do, they stayed there for quite some time. Hem didn’t want to accept the cheese was gone. So as Haw. But slowly Haw realized the cheese would not be back. He needed to explore for new cheese. But he was afraid.

After some time of struggling, Haw took the first step to venture out into the maze. But Hem remained skeptical and refused to join Haw. Throughout the process, Haw learned a lot about himself. He finally able to find the new cheese and met his friends mice.

This story tells us that change happens (your cheese will be moved!). We must, therefore, anticipate the change (i.e. get ready for the cheese to move). Not only that, we need to monitor the change (smell the cheese often so that you know when it is getting old). We must be ready to adapt to change quickly (let go of old cheese). When the change comes, change with it (move with the cheese). Finally, enjoy the change (savor the adventure and enjoy the new cheese). Life doesn’t stop here. Be ready to change quickly and enjoy it again (they keep moving the cheese).

Now, which one are you? Sniff, Scurry, Hem or Haw?

The wedding of ....

This wedding has some similarity with ours but, by comparison in every detail, each is still distinctly unique.

Day 2: A visit to some of The Tokyo Toilet project

On the second day of my trip, I decided to visit some of the public toilets under The Tokyo Toilet project. The idea was inspired by the film  Perfect Days . Since the public toilets under this project are scattered around western side of Tokyo, I visited a few in Shibuya area, which are quite close to each other. One notable location is Yoyogi Park.  One of the highlights of these designer toilets is the transparent toilet. Its transparent glass walls will turn opaque when the door is locked. This feature is based on the electrochromic effect. However, this feature is unavailable during late autumn and winter, which coincided my visit. The key takeaway from this visit: an eye opening experience about toilet culture and social inclusivity. Trip 01-06: Day 8-9 (The end)

Day 8-9 (13-14 May) We proceed to Thailand in the morning. The immigration process was the easiest. We crossed the river by boat and reached Chiang Khong (the border town of Thailand). Then a mini van to Chiang Mai. Arrived in Chiang Mai about 4pm. Looked for a cheap room and then had an excursion around the town. The next day we will depart and back to M'sia. It has been a pleasant trip for the whole week. Laos is a beautiful and peaceful country with abundant of unspoiled forest and mountains. Now we have to get back to our real life. End of the trip.
